Power of a Pause ~ What’s Your Hurry?

Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it.  ~Soren Kierkegaard

Got the new Oprah today. Great issue on power. Page 18 has interviews with contributors on power source. Loved Elizabeth Gilbert’s comments on what people often underestimate with regards to power. She says it’s the power of a “pause”. I can’t agree more. As I move towards crone and try to take things slower and be in the “now”, I have realized that I don’t have to make a decision immediately and it’s often better if I don’t. Unless it’s “fight or flight” I can take my time to really mull over what needs to be done. Sometimes it’s nothing and by doing something, usually my first reaction, I make the situation worse.

A pause works really well in conversation, too. Instead of rushing in to speak a pause gives us time to think about what we want to say and how to say. To reflect on what was said by the other person, to really listen, look at their body language. Nothing good comes from haste.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.  ~Lao Tzu
